Developers On The Move: The Race For Flexibility And Pay - This week in web dev (November 3rd, 2023)

Hello friend đź‘‹! The weekend is near, but we still found some relevant news for you this week. Developers everywhere are hopping between jobs more frequently, prioritizing flexibility and income over learning opportunities. Meanwhile, Vercel launched a font called Geist. Remix added Vite support. And Google's latest core update rolled out, aiming to keep search results fresh.

We also got this week’s deal/discount!

Vercel, the company best known for its hosting products and Next.js, recently revealed its new font, Geist. Following the “Swiss design movement” and Vercel’s own design system, Geist aims to be minimalistic and fast.

With 9 weights, 652 glyphs, 9 style sets, 32 languages, and both sans and mono versions, this is definitely a font to check out.

Earlier this week, Remix released version 2.2.0. With this version a new plugin was added, support for Vite. With Vite, DX will be much faster, saving developers valuable time when creating their products. Remix claims 10x faster HMR and 5x faster HDR.

Remix is also an official Vite sponsor from now on.

Google recently started rolling out its core update for November 2023. Core updates are focused on keeping the Google algorithm fresh so that the best and most relevant content will be shown first. Although this sometimes shakes up different website rankings, you should not fear this time. Google claims that any website that produces helpful and people-first content, should not be scared of losing rankings.

A new developer survey, by Stackoverflow, found that flexibility has become more important than learning opportunities at work. In 2021, 54% cited learning as a top reason to stay at their job. That dropped to 44% this year.

Meanwhile, flexibility remains the #1 priority for developers across experience levels. With AI tools expanding, developers seem focused on maintaining work-life balance overtaking additional training and learning.

The survey also found that developers of all ages are more open to new jobs compared to previous years. This suggests a tight job market hasn't made developers complacent. Income and flexibility remain top factors driving job searches.
